Tag association / dissociation

Tag association / dissociation

Overview

Tag Linking Documentation

Info
The Tag Linking feature allows you to associate a physical tracking ID (e.g., BLE tag MAC address) with an existing trackable entry. Access it via the Link Tag floating action button on the Asset page.

Use Cases

Link Physical Tag to Metadata Entry

- Create metadata trackable with person/asset information
- Later link physical BLE tag when available
- Maintains data continuity

Replace Broken Tag

- Existing trackable has old/broken tag ID
- Link new tag ID to same trackable
- Preserves all properties and history

Assign Tag to Pre-Created Entry

- Bulk create trackables via CSV with temporary IDs
- Link actual tag IDs as tags are distributed
- Efficient for large deployments

Tag Status and Actions

Automatic Detection
The system automatically detects the association status of a tag and prompts the appropriate action:

If tag is associated:
- System prompts to dissociate
- Allows unlinking tracking ID from trackable

If tag is not associated:
- System prompts to associate
- Allows linking tracking ID to trackable

Tag Type Dependent Actions

Info
The tag's type is displayed in the list, and the association/dissociation process differs based on the selected type

1. Metadata Type Tags

Associating:
- System prompts to choose from list of tracking IDs
- List shows tracking IDs from non-metadata tags only
- Selected tracking ID is assigned to metadata tag
- Metadata tag becomes linked to physical tag

Dissociating:
- Removes tracking ID from metadata tag/
- Tracking ID reverts to non-MAC address format
- Tag returns to metadata-only status
- No longer appears on map

2. Non-Metadata Type Tags (Tag, Smartphone)

Associating:
- System prompts to type a name value
- Entered value is assigned to tag's name attribute
- Tag becomes identifiable by custom name
- Name appears in trackable list

Dissociating:
- Removes custom name value
- Name reverts to tag's default MAC address
- Tag identified by MAC address only
- Tracking continues with MAC address as identifier

Step-by-Step Process

1. Click Link Tag button (floating action button with link icon)
2. Link dialog opens
3. Select trackable from dropdown (search by name)
4. Enter tracking ID (MAC address format: AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF)
5. Click Link/Associate button
6. Trackable now has new tracking ID

Alternative: Scan Tag

- Some implementations support scanning tag directly
- Tag ID auto-fills in field
- Reduces manual entry errors

Available Trackables

- Trackables without tracking ID (metadata entries)
- Trackables with non-Tag kind (Smartphone, Metadata)
- Trackables available for linking

Not Available for Linking

- Trackables already linked to physical tags
- Inactive trackables (depending on configuration)
- Trackables from other sites

Search Functionality

- Type to search by trackable name
- Filters list in real-time
- Shows matching results only

After Linking

Tag Updates

- Tracking ID field populated with new ID
- Kind may change to "Tag" (depending on configuration)
- Tag becomes available on map
- Location updates start appearing

Verification

1. Find asset in list
2. Check tracking ID is displayed
3. Verify asset appears on map (if in range)
4. Check location updates in Details Tab
